We first started out as the Christian Church in Abilene, Texas in a two story building at South 8th and Chestnut in 1956. The congregation moved after that several times for short periods.  Several months at an abandoned lumber yard near the outskirts of Abilene, then at the Lone Star Gas Company Building in the Blue Flame Room, on to the Garden Club on Westwood, finally landing in the building at 1702 Woodard Street in 1958.  At that time it was owned and occupied by Our  Savior Lutheran church.  They were building a new facility and were willing to share the building until the new building was complete.

In January 1959 the Christian Church incorporated under the name of Southwest Park Christian Church; Southwest Park being the development in which the building is located. In August 1959 Southwest Park Christian Church purchased the building from the Lutheran Church.

On November 29, 1959 a Dedication Service was held by the congregation to dedicate the building to the service of God and to consecrate themselves anew to the worship and service of our Lord and to the establishment of His kingdom among men.

In November 2000 the name was changed to Abilene Christian Church.

Over the past 50 years a changing neighbor-hood and several unfortunate splits have caused the size of the congregation to dwindle  to its present  size of  30.  Those of us who remain are determined to not break faith with those who started the work 50 years ago.  We therefore rededicate ourselves to the service of Our Lord, to our neighborhood and to our community.

If you are a Christian looking for a church that preaches the Word of God and not psychology;  that is not legalistic, but preaches moderation in all things;  preaches that such a thing as sin still exists and that evil is prevalent in the world today,  but still has a message of hope and encouragement, then you might want to visit us.  We welcome you!  If you are not a Christian but are seeking understanding and knowledge as to why we are, then you are particularly WELCOME!
